Why don't we just spell words the way they sound?

Foloing a speling sistem (evin ours in wich mane words hav speling vareants) alows us to comunikate beter. Thear ar bilyons of English speakers and tha English language is estemated to hav at leyst a milion words. chosing to spel words tha wey thay sownd wood create an infinit number of vareants, as we ech hear sownds slitely difrently. preskoolers yuse wat thay no abowt leters and sownds to rite mesajes yusing invented speling, or speling words bi tha wey thay sownd. Bi lerning to strech out tha words to halp them hear individyule sownds, preskoolers kan labil a pikshur. In this vere urly staje of speling, tha child atempts to comunikate a mesage but tha child may be tha onle won hu kan desifer tha mesage. That rite thear is tha anser to this kwestshun - that our abilite to comunikate wood be grately impeared if we did not hav a speling sistem for our English vokabulari.

We don't write the words how they sound because someone very unintelligent invented our writing system. : P Now me on the other hand. . . . . .

They are actually written like that because our language is derived from Latin.

Our language is derived from Latin . . . and Greek, and Gaelic, and German, and French etc.

A few centuries ago English was spelt phoneticaly.

You mean 'phonetically'? :-D

The English language was (and still is) created out of a mish-mash of several languages, whose words became distorted and re-pronounced over the period of time, until we have our version of English that we use today. Or at least, the version from the 1950's that I usually make use of and refuse to comply to the more modern version with such abominations as "chillax" (a combination of 'chill' and 'relax'), "alright" (it is spelled 'all right', and no one can change that for me!), "thankyou" (for pity's sakes people, please use a space between those words). So, as you can see, I'm a bit of an English language "snob". :-P

Hands up if you speak in KJV style!!!

I must confess that I like the word 'chillax' and I use 'thankyou' and 'alright'.

But Mada is definitely NOT a loser!

(How much do you learn in university anyway?!?!?)

I'm sorry MystExplorer, for my rather hasty words earlier on. Also, I admit that my post about the English language was rather inflammatory and seemed snobbish, even though it was not intended as such.

Please forgive me.
